Interview with oil and gas pipeline expert Zhang Wenwei

Zhang Wenwei, chief engineer of Design Institute of China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd., has participated in large-scale national energy channel projects such as West to east gas pipeline, Central Asia natural gas pipeline, China Myanmar oil and gas pipeline and China Russia east gas pipeline since 1990s.

Reporter: how about the overall level of pipeline construction in China?

Zhang Wenwei: in the 1970s, China began to build oil and gas pipelines on a large scale. After 2000, the construction climax started late, but the starting point is high. At present, the development speed and technical level have entered the world's advanced ranks. Over the past decade, China has built more than 60000 kilometers of oil and gas pipelines, with the largest diameter of 1422 mm and the highest grade of X80 steel. From the desert Gobi in the west to the wetland water network in the East, from the alpine permafrost in the northeast to the dangerous mountain canyon in the southwest, the landform and geological conditions of the pipeline are complex and diverse. To this end, we have overcome many world-class problems, turning the impossible into the possible, and let the world see the capacity and level of China's pipeline construction.

Reporter: what progress has pipeline construction made in recent years?

Zhang Wenwei: first, single pipeline has greater gas transmission capacity. In recent years, with the increase of diameter, pressure and steel grade of natural gas pipeline, the transportation capacity is large and the transportation efficiency is high. For example, the diameter of the west to east gas pipeline is 1016 mm, the pressure level is 10 MPa, and the designed annual gas supply is 12 billion cubic meters; if you look at the China Russia east pipeline, the diameter of the pipeline is 1422 mm, the pressure level is 12 MPa, and the designed annual gas supply is 38 billion cubic meters.

Second, the ability of independent research and development is stronger. From introduction to innovation, taking the west east gas transmission line as the watershed, the localization of pipeline steel and key equipment has taken a solid step. During the construction of the first line of West to east gas pipeline, almost all compressor units and large-diameter all welded ball valves were imported. Through independent research and development, the second line of West to East Gas Pipeline began to realize large-scale domestic production, with the application of X80 high-strength steel ranking first in the world. In the east line of China and Russia, from 1422mm and X80 pipes to some equipment, many of them have realized domestic production, reaching the level of foreign similar advanced products. The use of domestic equipment not only ensures the safety of energy channel, but also reduces the investment of pipeline equipment by more than 20%.

Third, the level of automation and intelligence is higher. Pipeline construction from manual welding, semi-automatic welding to full-automatic welding; from manual steel brush rust removal, manual torch heating joint repair, to mechanized anti-corrosion joint repair; from X-ray film weld detection to digital scanning "physical examination" The East China Russia natural gas pipeline will realize the simultaneous construction of physical pipeline and virtual pipeline, which is expected to promote the transformation of China's pipeline construction from digitalization to intelligence and become a demonstration project of intelligent pipeline.

Fourth, the concept of safety and environmental protection is better. In the past, the route selection was more economical, and the pipeline length was reduced to adapt to the environment. Now, the priority is safety and environmental protection. In the early stage of route selection, the urban and rural planning areas and environmentally sensitive areas should be avoided as far as possible, and the protection of animals, vegetation and water bodies should be paid attention to.

In the future, natural gas pipelines will be woven into a dense network. Pipeline construction will be further transformed to digital and intelligent, and the concept of safety and environmental protection will be integrated into the whole life cycle of pipeline design, construction and operation.
